Las Vegas has the 7th busiest airport in the country. Couple that fact with the flat city with very limited vegetation and you get a LOT of noise pollution.
How does this affect bird songs?
Researchers have found that birds in noisy cities are very adaptable. Not only do they sing louder, but they also sing at a higher-frequency to elevated their songs above the low-frequency street noise.
Another interesting finding was that birds sing louder during the week when there is more commuter noise and reduce their volume on the weekends.
Birds are also more resistant to temporary and permanent hearing loss or damage than people or other animals, because the sensory hair cells in bird’s inner ears can renew themselves and thus compensate for heavy noise pollution!
